Peace Envoys
Approach
The increasing use of top-down governmental and inter-governmental tools for crisis prevention, conflict management, peacemaking and peacekeeping must be accompanied by bottom-up approaches to conflict transformation and peacebuilding.
Designed to address this need, our Peace Envoy Programme is uniquely situated to facilitate constructive interaction between official government peace efforts and civil society interests.
Peace envoys complement the work of official special envoys working for the UN and other international governmental organisations. By supporting official activities at other levels, as well as representing civil society concerns to government officials, peace envoys enable greater coherence and co-ownership for crisis prevention, conflict resolution and peacebuilding endeavours across a broad spectrum of society.
TopQualification & mandate
These highly qualified and skilled individuals – women and men from northern and southern countries with significant senior-level experience – have the capacity to work effectively with all key stakeholders and actors in a conflict environment. Their mandate is built upon the acceptance, trust and confidence that they have earned from these parties. This necessary degree of good faith is reinforced by the medium- to long-term commitment that they make to their areas of engagement.
TopFocus
Peace envoys initiate a range of diverse activities. They support local and regional actors working on peace, human rights and justice. They help strengthen structures and processes for negotiation and peacebuilding. Additionally, they work to forge effective links between local and international efforts to promote peace as well as undertake activities from Track I to Track III.
While global in scope, the Peace Envoy Programme has a special focus on enhancing South-South exchange and cooperation.
Our peace envoys are engaged in Southern Caucasus, Lebanon, Bolivia, Sri Lanka and other parts of South and Southeast Asia.
